4:40 PM Kurt Sorge Giant Faith

Kurt Sorge

So this has been out there for a little bit now. If you read Decline or are a fan of Giant on Facebook you have seen it already. I shot this back in March at Giant's Team Camp in Woodward. If you are in to stories keep reading.

The Kurt ad from 2009 was shot at Woodward as well so the original big challenge was to shoot him there and not have it look too "Woodward- ish." We had been talking about the old downhill BMX track the year before. It needed work and Kurt was pretty pumped to ride it, but it needed a bunch of work and weather and timing would be an issue no doubt.

By the time Kurt arrived the track already had a start on the clean-up but not enough and we were being heavily challenged with rain and snow. Even though I was there for ten days I really didn't think we'd get it done based on the weather situation. Kurt worked on the track with a few others and despite the rain and snow got a portion of it ridable for some testing. I decided to shoot through it to make sure I had something since we didn't know what would happen with the weather (actually we did- more of the same.)

After a few run in's he sent it and I knew the jump would work- we just needed enough time for him to get comfy, and me to figure out what angle would work best for the composition. This jump is huge, and shooting for an ad like this you need to incorporate lot's of elements. It's more than just making a rad photo. There are people to please and balancing it all while keeping your own creative style can be hard. In the end I took Kurt's advice and moved then got three goes for a "banger" before the weather took over. The ad photo was the last shot I took of Kurt outdoors during his ten day stint at team camp. From his first jump to the last shot was maybe 45 minutes.
