About 45 minutes into his record attempt KK's training partner John Walsh gives him the thumb's up that he is on track.

12:14 PM YSC West Coast Tour De Pink

Tour

Last fall I volunteered my time to document The West Coast Tour De Pink. I had heard of this event for a few years and wanted to pitch in but the timing wasn't right until this year. This is a great organization and I look forward to documenting future events as well.

Cross"

I'm way behind on updates. I've got a ton of cool stuff since Interbike to share- but rather than sitting in front of the computer posting when I'm not shooting I've been out riding my bike and planning for next year.

I got back from the Bicycle Retailer Dealer Tour (pics here) and since Adam Craig was going to be racing cross less than an hour from me I headed out there. He killed it and I got a few gems. Those will come later. For now enjoy the pic above or head on over to the Giant Facebook Page. for a short term fix of cross goodness.

6:17 PM Red Bull Rampage

Got back from Red Bull Rampage late Monday and had a slideshow in mind. Took me a few days to recover and finish up required projects before I could do it- but I'm fairly pleased with the result.

Enjoy,

1:10 PM Latest Shimano XTR Ad

Adam

Sometimes photos sit around for awhile before they get used. The latest XTR ad is from the 2009 US Championships in Granby. I'd file this one under pleasant surprises... Adam Craig powering up the steepest part of the climb near the start finish area.

12:54 PM Danny "DH" Hart

Danny

Shooting Danny is a blast. Always ready for more and style for miles! Hopefully next year he spends a little more time in the states or I make it over the pond to shoot him doing more than racing. This was shot near Tehachapi, CA during Giant Team Camp this past March. We were trying to model something after the Duncan Riffle ad from earlier in the year. After some weather challenges I think we nailed it.

7:46 PM Windham Mtn MTB World Cup

feet"

The shot above was during the final practice of the DH event during the MTB World Cup at Windham Mtn in New York. It was a long ways up steep terrain to get to that spot, and tells you everything you need to know about MTB fans on the east coast and the need for this level of competition in the USA. High expectations for crowds and overall energy were easily made. I have a feeling next year will be even better!

The Road gap was a big attraction. The crashes, live DJ, and Beer Garden certainly helped!

6:02 PM One Week.

Giant

I got home late last night. Woke up this morning and starting scanning through what I've shot in the past week. Kinda surprised myself. I'm not saying I took any "earth shattering" photos, but I have been all over the place, shot some fun stuff, hung out with great people, got the job done, and done well when it really counted. First up was a last minute clothing shoot. 25 items with 2 models on white seamless. The above shot is from that. I budgeted a day and a half for that finished in 3/4 of a day- including post work.

Next up was Carl Decker and his opportunity to participate in the SuperRally at Xgames. We dragged him to the Giant warehouse and knocked out some pre-race shots of him, his Dad, and the car. This included some video (check the Giant Youtube page next week.) Budgeted an evening and a morning for the pre-race stuff. Finished in one night.

Since I was already at Xgames I grabbed this shot of Ken Block in practice. This photo gives a real behind the scenes look at what Xgames is like in person when the main event's aren't going on.

6:12 PM Downieville Classic

working conditions

Working conditions were tough in Downieville. No or little cell service and sketchy internet. Been pretty busy so I decided to set-up camp and finish some work as the Giant Pit was being put away above me.

Downieville isn't for the weak of heart. It's tough riding, tougher racing, and challenging to shoot. Giant owned it though. More here:

5:41 PM Ride Life Lars Boom

During the Tour of California I got a last minute assignment to follow around Team Rabobank and film for a couple of shorts. With such quick notice, the difficulty to move around the event and the language barrier it was certainly one of the more difficult projects I've had.

The team was very accommodating and my buddy Kip Mikler helped a ton in moving around and keeping us on task. It took a couple weeks after to get into the editing bay but the guys over at Eric Blum Productions helped me get through it really quick.

The whole video was shot on a Canon 7d hand held using the Zacuto Run and Gun Kit, music is by Jeremy Combs. Based on the language barrier, access difficulty (from AEG not Rabobank,) and speed at how things go at a race like this I'm very pleased with the results and am looking forward to similar projects in the future.

4:40 PM Kurt Sorge Giant Faith

Kurt Sorge

So this has been out there for a little bit now. If you read Decline or are a fan of Giant on Facebook you have seen it already. I shot this back in March at Giant's Team Camp in Woodward. If you are in to stories keep reading.

The Kurt ad from 2009 was shot at Woodward as well so the original big challenge was to shoot him there and not have it look too "Woodward- ish." We had been talking about the old downhill BMX track the year before. It needed work and Kurt was pretty pumped to ride it, but it needed a bunch of work and weather and timing would be an issue no doubt.

By the time Kurt arrived the track already had a start on the clean-up but not enough and we were being heavily challenged with rain and snow. Even though I was there for ten days I really didn't think we'd get it done based on the weather situation. Kurt worked on the track with a few others and despite the rain and snow got a portion of it ridable for some testing. I decided to shoot through it to make sure I had something since we didn't know what would happen with the weather (actually we did- more of the same.)

After a few run in's he sent it and I knew the jump would work- we just needed enough time for him to get comfy, and me to figure out what angle would work best for the composition. This jump is huge, and shooting for an ad like this you need to incorporate lot's of elements. It's more than just making a rad photo. There are people to please and balancing it all while keeping your own creative style can be hard. In the end I took Kurt's advice and moved then got three goes for a "banger" before the weather took over. The ad photo was the last shot I took of Kurt outdoors during his ten day stint at team camp. From his first jump to the last shot was maybe 45 minutes.

4:53 PM Cooling off after Dark

Allen Needle

The photo above was from the first day of the Bicycle Retailer Industry and News Dealer Tour. We started riding at about 9am and finished the day well after dark. Allen Needle from Giant Bicycles is trying to cool down from the 90 degree 90% humidity night.

This was my 5th BRAIN DC Dealer Tour. I was stoked to be on board again. I love shooting athletes, racing and events, but these tours add perspective to the realities of the bike business. Any of us that don’t work on the retail side depend on retailers to constantly sell through bikes and other bike related products to keep so many of us in jobs.

Beyond that it’s a great way to meet and hangout with people from other companies in relaxed low pressure way. Great times with the Pedros Trio, Dorothy from Todson, the gang from BRAIN, and of course many of the Giant folks.

This tour was in Washington DC. Be sure to check www.bicycleretailer.com and http://www.bicycleretailer.com/blog-11/brain-blog for coverage from while we were there. The print issue including a photo essay should be out in another month or so.

8:45 AM New Fox Ad

Pretty stoked on this one. Taken in the woods of Santa Cruz at mid-day with a lot of light power hanging on the side of a very wet poison oak infested hill.

11:45 AM FoxHead Poster

Really not a fan of selective color. Turns out Greg over at Fox isn't either but when he tried it on a whim for the poster below it worked. These are some images from Giant's Team Camp he put together for an autograph signing @ Sea Otter. Pretty stoked on how it turned out.

8:37 AM Fontana City National

Was in Fontana this past weekend shooting the 1st "real" mountain bike race of the year. Head over to this gallery on the Giant Facebook fan page for a few pics of the Giant folks. They all killed it as usual.

On a side note I don't generally shoot people crashing, mostly because I don't like crashing and I cringe when I know it's happening so I don't press the shutter. On Sunday I went ahead and shot a few crashes during the DH race and ended up keeping the one below. My reason for shooting the crashes was mostly due to the fact that 80% of the experts coming through crashed through here so as I was setting up for Duncan and Jared I needed to shoot something.

6:35 PM Coming to Select Giant Dealers Now

Apparently it's all over Taiwan too.

The main banner is 4X6 feet. Thanks Sizzlechest and Tab for being willing models! I don't think I ever pulled the "one more time" comment on that shoot.
