6:49 PM Keith Ketterer- Master's World Hour

Keith Ketterer

About 45 minutes into his record attempt KK's training partner John Walsh gives him the thumb's up that he is on track.

More after the jump!

In 2010 I was able to shoot Keith Ketterer (KK) attempt and break the Master World Hour record for the 50-54 age group. I was honored to be a part of it and made a post about it here. It was a skeleton crew of us there that day. I was the only photog and there were just a handful of people.

About three weeks ago it was a different story for KK's attempt at the record for 55-59 age bracket. This time there was a whole group of support from employees at Giant cheering him on. There were also a number of other photographers. It was great to see all the support for Keith.

This was 4th or 5th time shooting at this velodrome and the challenges are immense. The poorly lit indoor's are certainly a challenge- but the addition of the extreme high speeds of the Keith on the track, limited room to move for different angles, and trying to keep everything clean make it really tough to come up with something unique.

I approached it by running two different set-up's on the track- both with opposing light- some soft and some hard. One in a corner and the other for the straight. I really wanted to run higher shutter speeds so I sacrificed my ISO and ran between 800 and 1600 so I could get up around 1/800th on most of my exposures. I ended up pretty happy with the results.

Congratulation's on the record KK!

KK spent several hours on the bike or on the rollers before the actual attempt in the early evening.

KK's coach Roger Young motor paces him around the track during his warm-up while training partner John Walsh rides close behind.

The USA Cycling Officials gave KK's bike the full treatment to make sure it was "legal."

Keith Ketterer

KK is a machine. He hit this corner in the same exact spot every lap and at pretty close to the same speed.

Deep into the attempt you could start to see the sweat dripping from his chin and the effort was clear.

I feel like this photo really tells the story of the hour record. All alone on the track.

I had about 15 seconds just after KK finished to capture him before he was surrounded.

Just because the record was done didn't mean KK could go home. He had to do mandatory drug testing post ride and didn't get home until nearly 12:30.
